New IWTO Website Launched - The International Wool Textiles Organisation (IWTO) redesigned its website as a vital communication tool for its members and for the wool community as a whole. This decision resulted in an improved website which offers a fresh new look that technically provides its online visitors with significant improvements in navigation and easier accessibility for users around the world. The new website of IWTO reflects its vision on the positive development of the natural fibre “wool”, its high quality equitable benefits for the consumers, and the strength of its work. IWTO has experienced exceptional growth in its policy influence and importance within its membership, as well as other stakeholders. Having a new section on wool as a fibre, it is also providing information for retailers and consumers, and just anybody interested in wool. Today, the new website reflects the breadth and dynamism of IWTO, charting its progress on core activities and campaigns.

The 2010 IWTO Wool Round Table will take place on November 15th and 16th in Biella, Italy.
The programme has been defined and online registration is now open.
The meeting will discuss achievements and further strategy of the lobby efforts of IWTO, presenting the IWTO Lobby Projects Update on its 2nd year and in particular, the new international marketing activity of the wool industry, the so called “Campaign for Wool”, supported by HRH Prince Charles.
Participation is especially important and recommended for Executive Committee Members, Heads of Delegation, Heads of Associate Members, and Committee Chairmen / Secretaries. Interested members are also welcome.

The 79th Congress of the International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) has ended on a very positive note for the future of wool.
The event took place from May 3 – 5, 2010 in Paris.
Under the theme "Wool – Change to a Healthier and Safer Environment", prominent speakers made the event a valuable experience, presenting a broad spectrum on the current developments of the global wool industry.

Review - Wool Round Table 2009 New Delhi
Setting the Future Strategy
At the IWTO Wool Round Table 2009, held in New Delhi (India) on 18th and 19th of November 2009, around 40 leading woollen and worsted manufacturers met with representatives from grower nations to discuss strategies on “how to market wool” under the current market conditions. The Wool Round Table was held parallel to the annual convention of IAF – International Apparel Federation, with whom IWTO cooperates. During the meeting, contacts to important apparel manufacturers were established. The significance of the natural attributes of wool in the apparel sector was successfully communicated through a “wool show case” at the IAF convention as well as with a presentation on wool from IWTO Executive Committee Member, Peter Ackroyd.

Wool Round Table 2009 - New Delhi
The 2009 Wool Round Table will take place on November 18th and 19th in New Delhi, India. The programme has been defined and online registration is open for your use. Key speaker at the event will be Mr. S.K. Singhal, President of RAYMONDS Ltd. (Textiles). This event will include meetings on the topic of the future strategy of our sector as well as discussions with leading players of the international apparel industry. Joint sessions with the International Apparel Federation (IAF) offer the possibility to exchange views with their members on the positioning of wool in apparel. 78th IWTO Congress - Following the annual Congress of the International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) held in Frankfurt from June 15th to 18th, IWTO President Guenther Beier issued a statement praising growers and industrialists throughout the wool pipeline for commitments made at the congress to product marketing and ecological excellence.

Official Launch - International Year of Natural Fibres - March 2009
The International Year of Natural Fibres 2009 is now reality! It has been officially launched at the Headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome on 22 January 2009. This event was attended by representatives of the news media, representatives of governments of FAO member countries, and representatives of various natural fibre industries. IWTO Immediate Past President Michael Lempriere passed away
Immediate Past President Michael Lempriere passed away on 1 October 2008. With this tragic death, the international wool industry has sadly lost one of its most respected figures. Michael Lempriere’s funeral was held at Christ Church, Toorak (Australia) on 10 October 2008. The attendance was impressive, filling the large church. Mourners came from Victoria, other Australian states and overseas countries including Italy, New Zealand and South Africa. It was a moving service with eulogies from Diana, William and Ben Lempriere, long time business colleague Roberto Botto and lifelong friend Stuart Cuming. The number in attendance and the distances travelled bear testimony to the respect with which Michael Lempriere was held in the industry. On page four of this newsletter you will find a full Tribute to Michael Lempriere.

IWTO 77th Congress 2008 Beijing
The environmentally friendly attribute brings wool back onto the retail floor!
The 77th IWTO Congress, held in Beijing, China from the 13th to the 16th April 2008 has come to a close. More than 350 delegates from 27 countries discussed the positive attributes of wools under the theme “Wool – The Environmentally Friendly Fibre. At the Congress, IWTO President Günther Beier reemphasised the importance of capitalising on the ecological aspects of the Wool fibre and its inherent properties as a textile fibre, which can bring wool back onto the retail floor prominently. In this respect, President Beier congratulated especially Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) / The Woolmark Company for their very positive and innovative marketing approach which went a long way towards getting wool back into its rightful place as the world’s premium Apparel and Interior Textile Fibre.

The theme of the IWTO Congress 2008 is “Wool the Environmentally Friendly Fibre”. Environmentally friendly, sustainability and climate change – these are now the key words not only for idealists, but proving a challenge to nearly all industry sectors! Each activity, each product, each service is nowadays trying to conform with this trend, with all its related aspects and catchphrases like ‘health’, ‘sustainability’, ‘organic’, ‘green’, ‘clean’, ‘biological’, ‘authentic’, ‘life quality’, etc.

Review - IWTO Annual Congress – Edinburgh, May 13-16, 2007
“Brand Marketing through Design and Innovation”
The IWTO 76th Annual Congress was held in Edinburgh (UK) from 13th to 16th May, with the theme: “Brand Marketing through Design and Innovation”. The most important highlights of the Congress perfectly corresponding with this leading motto were sessions devoted to Apparel and Interior Textiles. Delegates experi enced great performances given by retailers participating in Test Marketing Projects, whose results have been announced: George Zilvetti (Saks Fifth Avenue, USA) and Kenneth Wilsey (Dillards Department Stores, USA). Mr. Wilsey said:
“Consumer Education is key – The in-store experience coupled with the sales associate training – was effective in getting the Dillard’s customer to understand that Extra Fine Merino Wool is not itchy and scratchy.”

IWTO Annual Congress – Edinburgh, May 13-16, 2007
“Brand Marketing through Design and Innovation ”
In his address to the Wool Forum in Xi’an in November 2006, IWTO President Michael Lempriere remarked that “wool must command the higher ground - there is no place for “cheap and nasty” in our customer demographic.”
One of the ways in which wool can undoubtedly command the higher ground is through appropriate branding, and the Congress in Edinburgh will focus very much on the marketing of brands through design and innovation.

Review - IWTO Wool Forum – Xi’an November 19-21, 2006
“Wool: the way forward - Competition and Collaboration”
The IWTO Wool Forum Xi’an that has just ended was organised jointly with China Wool Textile Association and Xi’an Polytechnic University and welcomed 100 international and 100 Chinese delegates during its three-day run. The event was held under the title “Wool: the way forward – Competition and Collaboration”. The first day of the meeting, “China Day”, has raised discussions about the impact of the growing dominance of China in the global wool industry.

The next IWTO Wool Forum will take place from November 19-21 under the theme "Wool - the way forward - Competition and Collaboration”. A Technical Day is organised on November 18th. Frank Sieren, one of the leading European experts on China (according to the London Times and the Financial Times), will open the IWTO Wool Forum with his presentation “The China Code”, painting the scenario of China’s future role in the world economy.

Review - IWTO Annual Congress – Cairo, May 9-12, 2006
“Winning Strategies for the Customer-focused Wool and Textile Enterprise”
The Congress was officially opened by Dr Nazif, Prime Minister of Egypt, many topics were discussed and the future direction of the Wool Industry was further shaped.
As a political outcome, the International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) is prepared to help persuade the Australian Government to relieve the Australian wool industry of “the impossible burden of the UK pension plan liability”, president Mr. Michael Lempriere said at the opening of the IWTO’s 75th Congress, in Cairo from 9th to 12th of May.

Review - IWTO Wool Forum Biella November 26-29, 2005
The IWTO Wool Forum Biella that has just ended welcomed more than 200 participants during its four-day run. This year's title, 'Improving Demand for Wool’, was the main theme of all the lectures. Although the market continues to be in the doldrums, the high-grade speakers were able to offer the sector a host of practical information. "The wool sector needs a communication platform where it can exchange information, ideas, approaches and solutions", explained Michael Lempriere, President of IWTO.

IWTO Country Summit , Moscow, September 7-8, 2005
The online registration for the IWTO Country Summit in Russia is now open! It is available on the IWTO website.
