Heimtexil 2020: Sustainability Makes Itself at Home

Messe Frankfurt hosted the Heimtextil International Trade Fair for Home and Contract Textiles for the 50th time, 7-10 January. IWTO Secretary General Dalena White reports.

We have come to appreciate the importance of  Heimtextil for its contact and networking opportunities, interior textile trend forecasts, and for being an important barometer of the textile trade’s feelings at the start of a new year.

Organisers Messe Frankfurt  welcomed 63.000 visitors and 2.952 exhibitors, although both numbers were down fom 2019.  Messe Frankfurt CEO Detlef Braun attributed the drop in visitors to a general economic slowdown, with many exhibitors expressing the current economic situation as "poor."

The Trend That's Here to Stay

Trend forecasts once again focussed on sustainability, and it appears that this trend has come to stay. The individual interpretations of what this term actually means in the interior textile world however, are as diverse as the designer applications on show.

Daily Green Tours, led by  sustainable textiles conultant Max Gilgenmann, highlighted exhibitions featuring new innovations in sustainable product, fibre or manufacturing processes. It was a great pleasure visiting Libeco Linen, where Sales Manager Anthony Goesaert talked  through the latest developments in high-quality bed, home and apparel fabric, made 100% in Belgium since 1858. Qualities like ‘Jules’ include 49% wool.

Biodegradability remains a huge concern. Some exhibitors noted labels and trims which are now made to biodegrade. The biggest challenge remains packaging, particularly single use, as consumers have become accustomed to purchasing their 300-thread count, organically grown, fully biodegradable percale cotton sheets wrapped in plastic. However, with the European Commission already targeting the top ten single use plastic items found on EU beaches, we may expect a rise in sustainable alternatives in the not too distant future.
