“Thulma and Chutka”
|
 |
The Thulma and Chutka are two traditional blankets made from Tibetan
Sheep wool. They are two of the oldest weaving traditions in the Kumaon
region of hilly Uttaranchal state in North India and are practised by
the Bhotiyas/Shauka women. Traditionally woven on a pit loom which
limits the width of fabric , these blankets are made by joining equal
strips. The objective of this project was to design and develop products
along the lines of these existing traditional craft skills and
techniques which would cater to the contemporary needs. The project
included exploring local skill sets like natural dyeing and spinning of
wool and other locally available tools and infrastructure. The Thulma
technique was going to be utilized to make throws and floor cushions. In
the chutka technique, textured rugs with uncut and cut piles were
explored.
